Blackberry picking season is well and truly upon us, and to mark this wonderful time of the fruitful frugal kitchen, the wife and I both have a week off from work. We are aiming to pick enough blackberries to make at least 20 gallons of blackberry wine - and as we need about 4lb of blackberries per gallon, we have a serious amount of picking to under take in order to collect the full 80lb required. We will be at it most days! I will update you all with the progress and our extra special blackberry wine recipe soon!

After a whole week of eating from our emergency food supply, our stock pile of tins, jars and packets, I am happy to give the verdict that we enjoyed all of the meals!
The main issue is that we did not have a wide variety of meat. We had meatballs and hotdogs. I would have liked some other meat source as well, as by the end of the experiment we were longing after a whole roast chicken and steak! Note to self, Meat is king! Emergency food day 4 We are testing our food preps - eating and analysing what we have stored so that if and when the SHTF we are in a position to know how to cook the food we have stashed away, and more importantly if we like it. There is a great deal of satisfaction in tucking into a tasty meal at the best of times, yet alone when you're feeling stressed due to circumstances beyond your control. The simplest meals taste superior in these situations. So far, our emergency food plan is going really well. We are eating normalish meals and enjoying them. Last nights meal was special fried rice - normal boiled rice with tinned peas, sweetcorn and hotdog sausages - a tin of tomatoes thrown in went really well. It is amazing how simple foods work wonders on the soul! We have been fridge free for the past three months now. We decided to turn off the fridge as we hardly ever used it, and it was a complete waste of electricity. Living without a fridge is a lifestyle choice, an awareness is needed and it does affect the way you shop and prepare food and meals. 3 months living without a fridge, and we are happy. There has only been one occasion when I could have really used a fridge, when I thought I wish we had this cooling device - and that is when we tried to make up some jellies in the heat of the summer -they just would not set! Granted, it is a minor inconvenience having to plan ahead, to make sure the ice blocks in the eski are rotated to keep the beers cool - but once a routine is established it is relatively straight forward. In the 3 months that we have been fridge free, I have not as yet had a cold beer.
