Blackberry picking season is well and truly upon us, and to mark this wonderful time of the fruitful frugal kitchen, the wife and I both have a week off from work. We are aiming to pick enough blackberries to make at least 20 gallons of blackberry wine - and as we need about 4lb of blackberries per gallon, we have a serious amount of picking to under take in order to collect the full 80lb required. We will be at it most days! I will update you all with the progress and our extra special blackberry wine recipe soon!

We have just attempted to breed our rabbits - 2 females with two males. We are hoping that the breeding was a success as we will be looking forward to tender rabbits for Samhain this year! We will be following up our rabbit breeding later on this evening with another session as we think it was a little too warm for one couple, who simply enjoyed a cwtch. I am not sure if rabbits breed in the cooler time of the day, or if they like it hot! Either way, one couple went at it, but a repeat performance this evening can only make things more certain! Would you believe it, we are well and truly trying to reuse and recycle as much as we can for our garden and two allotments. There is not a day that goes by that we don’t seem to acquire something, are given something or gather something that ends up as a beneficial addition to our garden. Recently, the Mrs has had to pop into a couple of coffee shops to pick up sandwiches for her office. She has started to bring back out something for herself - and I don’t mean a cuppa or a sandwich, heavens no, we wouldn’t spend a marked up price for something we could make at home for a lot less. She has been coming out of the coffee shops with their waste coffee grinds. These are absolutely awesome for adding to the garden. I am no expert in chemistry, but the coffee grinds are full of the nutritious trace elements that the plants love. We have simply sprinkled the coffee grinds over the beds and around the plants, hoping that they will gain an extra spurt of growth from the grinds. The best thing is, this fertilizer is fundamentally free to us, and will help us to have a better harvest! |
